Louis XV "The Well-Beloved"
"Après moi, le déluge"
Applying mainly to himself, this quote basically was Louis XV claiming that following his death, France will be left in turmoil. Ironically enough, fifteen years after his death, the French Revolution would commence.
Early Life:
Louis XV was born in France and lived from 1710-1774, he was handed throne as a 5 year old proceeding the death of Louis XIV and his parents Louis Duke of Burgundy, Marie Adélaïde of Savoy . Louis XV was loved by everyone as a child, and this earned him the nickname of "The Well-Beloved". Louis was too young to rule, so Duke of Orleans controlled until Louis was able.
Louis the Monarch:
After the death of Louis's uncle, Cardinal André Hercule de Fleury acted as Louis's minister during the early period of his reign. Fleury was the former tutor of Louis, and instilled the love of science in Louis as a child. Fleury acted as France's de facto ruler until he died in 1743. Louis soon won the War of Austrian Succession and but fell ill shortly after the war. He recovered and again gained the admiration of the French people. Soon tensions built up with Britain and Louis was forced to side with former enemy Austria, and this lead to France losing some land holdings abroad. The people began to dislike Louis and multiple attempts were made to take his life.
Near Death:
Louis would make some late attempts to reform the government after some terrible losses against Britain, but nothing seemed to work. Louis would soon die in Versailles, and his throne was passed on to Louis XVI and his wife, Queen Mary Antoinette.
